Sufi Whirling (or Sufi Spinning)

Postby gilnv » Thu Nov 19, 2015 5:07 pm

When researching the 13th century poet Rumi, I came across a Sufi ritual that I found fascinating. It is called whirling and it is practiced by some as a way of getting closer to God, sort of like meditating, praying or reading scriptures.
Origins of 'Whirling' is sometimes credited to Rumi, although I wouldn't bet on it, who knows.
Sufi whirling (or Sufi spinning) is a form of Sama or physically active meditation which originated among Sufis, and which is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order.

Here is a 2 video of Whirling.
the divine isn't a living entity, it is the living force within all of us.
