Star Spangled Banner lyrics & it's bad side

Postby gilnv » Sat Sep 30, 2017 3:24 pm

Here are the Star Spangled Banner lyrics and my critique after. I've included all 4 verses, although only the 1st is usually sung.

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

................
There are sentences in the 3rd verse (stanza) of the Star Spangled Banner National Anthem that are especially insulting to black people
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,

These lyrics refer to killing american slaves that joined the British Royal army to free themselves and other slaves in the United States by fighting the United States. And the lyrics 'land of the free' referred to white people that could own slaves', it wasn't referring to black people.
Anyone with compassion for human beings should be able to understand why some blacks wouldn't like standing for this anthem. In my opinion, 'putting standing for the anthem and flag ahead of someone's right to protest by kneeling' is awful.

I am not sure of the context of this quote:
God and Country are an unbeatable team; they break all records for oppression and bloodshed.
by Luis Bunuel

But there seems to be some truth in it. I am always a little apprehensive about expressing patriotic fervour and even more so of those that seem to promote it.

For what it is worth, and as part of the philosophy of full disclosure, the following was once an official verse of the English national anthem:

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King
The only reality is the moment that we call "Now".

Well did God help the good Marshall?

The Latvian anthem seems a little more benign ... but it thinks Latvia is worthy of Godly favour.
    God, bless Latvia!
    Our beloved fatherland
    Bless Latvia
Oh bless it, yet again! (repeat)

    Where Latvian daughters bloom
    Where Latvian sons sing
    May this always be
    Our Latvia! (repeat)

Apparently not. He was so unsuccessful at fighting them he got replaced by the Duke of Cumberland.

It seems that some sort of urban myth from the 1740's is still in circulation. And Wade did not fight "the Scots" but a sub-section of them called the Jacobites who were equally detested in both England and Scotland. The anonymous author(s) who temporarily added this verse to the National Anthem did not use the word "Jacobites" as that would have ruined the scansion of the verse. According to some scholars, the verse was never considered to be part of the British national anthem, but more like a satirical add-on that had a very short reign.
