God is dying

God is dying

Postby Aaron » Thu Aug 18, 2011 7:45 pm

Like most of us, I am not any sort of crusader for the agnostic cause. I will, given the opportunity, needle a friend or acquaintance in a moment of doubt with the notion that they might be an agnostic.

What chaps my rear is that the people I run with and most of the people that I know or work with don’t believe any more than I do. They are just terrified to admit it and hold on to some weak allegiance to the religion of their upbringing.

I think the majority of American people are agnostic and too chicken sh*t to admit it … and that’s how the minority rules.

My opinion: a generation or two and religion will be riding in the back seat.

I agree. Most of the people I know don't believe any more than I do either.

I only pray (hee hee) that you're right, Aaron. Wish I were as confident as you though. I'm beginning to think that our species may just not be all that bright.

By the way I likes your very existential signature:

The pope's latest visit to Spain is to try and repair the damage caused by so many people leaving the Roman Catholic church in that country.

In a single generation, the nation has turned from the most staunchest of allies to the Vatican to the most secular nation in Europe.

Given that, there is still good hope for us that we will be able to make inroads even into the Bible belt of our South Eastern states here in the USA.

I would be quite happy to get back to a society where only 17% or so were church goers - you know, rather like it was when the Founding Fathers got around to writing us a Constitution.

i believe one of the reasons that most agnostics / atheist wont come out of the agnostic / atheist closet is because there's so miny christian's / religious people
that look down on agnostics / atheist
and Christianity is so powerful in america :)

Part of the reluctance people have about their belief is the fear factor.

The concept of hell has done a world of hurt to society at large. As an insurance policy, they'll hang on even though they might
be riddled with doubt. But the voice it...never!!

I agree that God is dying. As younger people begin to study the basis of Christianity and all the other religions too, I believe they
will walk away from it or never embrace it at all.

Yes, that will be fine day that judgement, fear and human separations end.

This is not a topic that has not already been tread many ways in one shape or form. Just some times, it really reaches out and grabs me how ridiculous the hold religion has on the masses truly is.

I was recently warned that I need to really put some thought into my beliefs before it’s too late.

This was coming from someone whom I doubt has really thought about their beliefs more in a lifetime than I have in a day.
I’m not asking anyone to abandon their beliefs; I just wish more people would consider whether their beliefs are theirs or just a result of programming.

I don't think religion/god is dying. Religious people have significantly more children. The more religious, the more children.

Apart from Africa - which has become the main recruiting ground of all religions actively trying to convert people to their faith, religion is in rapid decline in all other areas of the world.

Even Spain has gone secular.

That does not mean that god is dying. Just the man made religions. They seem to have run their course and, in the manner of the democracy wind blowing through the mid-East, the rest of us are able to rid ourselves of the stifling influences of religion.

I thought that one of the Scandinavian countries, or maybe the Czech Republic, was the most secular in Europe. Maybe I'm just behind the times. I thought Britain was pretty damn secular, too. Damn. We're slipping. :)
